List of Materials for VICO 350/550

Film: Kodak Tri-X or Kodak Plus-X or Ilford equivalents (HP5 and FP4) in 36 exposure rolls. Plan on shooting about 1-2 rolls per week.

Film Developer: Kodak D-76, XTOL, or HC110. HC110 will be cheapest to mix large quantities for sheet film users.

Fixer: Ilford Rapid Fixer- 1liter bottle. You'll need about 2 for the quarter.

Wash Aid: Heico Perma Wash, 32 oz concentrate

Printing Paper: Printing Paper: Ilford Multigrade RC IV 8x10 F surface, and later Ilford Multigrade IV FB double weight glosssy. Most students will use about 100-200 sheets total.

(NOTE: Other surfaces besides glossy are available, but not recommended.)

Print Developer: Kodak Dektol, packet to make 1 gallon. You'll need about 2 for the quarter.

Stop Bath: Kodak Indicator Stop Bath, 16 oz. concentrate

Drying Aid: Kodak Photo Flo, any size bottle

Film Tank & Reels: 4-reel stainless tank and 4-35mm stainless reels are recommended. 2-reel tank OK for this class. Expensive Hewes-made stainless reels are much easier to load, but cost about $30 each. The school equipment cage has some tanks and reels for checkout, but has a limited supply of 4 reel tanks available.

Thermometer: Glass thermometer with 1-degree increments around the 65_80 degree range. Avoid dial type thermometers.

Print Tongs: Any kind you wish. Get a set of at least three. There have been some available in the cage for student use in the past, but they are battered.

Photo Sponge: A soft absorbent sponge for wiping excess water from film before hanging to dry. I buy Ocello sponges from C&E grocery store. Keep this absolutely clean and store in a baggie.

Negative Sleeves: Clear archival polyethylene or polypropylene sleeves like Printfile 35-7B. They come in 25 and in 100 sheet packages. Avoid non-archival PVC sleeves.

Jugs: Size will depend on the developer you select. Xtol will require 5 one-liter jugs but D-76 can use a one-gallon jug. Light-reducing brown jugs are recommended but you may substitute any clean reusable jug you wish. Get enough jugs for your film developer, paper developer (1-gal), and fixer (1-liter). Avoid thin plastic milk jugs — they don't seal well and may split open.

Dust remover: Dust Off compressed air or equivalent, or a soft camel's hair brush

Spotting fluid: Spot Tone #3, Marshall's Spot-All, or Berg Touchrite black (small bottle)

Spotting brush: A fine point spotting brush or a 0000 artist's brush

Mounting supplies: Bienfang/Seal Color Mount dry mount tissue 8x10 size and 11x14 mount board - enough for about 12 prints. Options to be described later in the quarter.

Misc: Small, inexpensive pair of scissors for cutting film & paper towels. Perhaps a bottle opener.
