Typesetting Fractions on a Mac


If you need to create typographically correct fractions in Quark on the Macintosh, follow these steps:

Type the numbers in order without spaces. Type Option-Shift-1 instead of the slash to create the fraction bar. It should not descend below the baseline like a regular slash character does.

 

fractions2.GIF (5120 bytes)
Select the number(s) in the fraction that precede the fraction bar, and use the Superior style on the Measurement Palette. It reduces the size of the numbers by 50% (default) and positions them higher.

fractions4.GIF (1718 bytes)
Select the numbers that follow the fraction bar and make them half of their former point size.
