Instructions for establishing the correct root path for your web site pages:

Step #1  On your Zip disk you need to create a new folder and name it WebStar 2.1 (see Figure #1).

Step #2  Open the new folder and create a new folder inside this WebStar 2.1 folder and name it your name and use no spaces or unusual characters (such as the / symbol). It is also good working practice to use all lowercase letters in filenames, especially if files are to be served by a UNIX computer.

Step #3  Open this new folder and create yet another new folder inside called yournamegifs and again be careful to use no spaces or symbol characters (see Figure #3).

Step #4  You should name the first page of your web site (the front door) home.html. When you create your first page for your web site be VERY CAREFUL to save it to the folder inside the WebStar 2.1 folder that is named with your name.

BEFORE you import any GIF or JPEG files onto a page for your web site you MUST place them in the folder titled "yournamegifs." This insures the links will not be broken when your content is loaded onto the VisCom web site server. Also, do not give a file name containing more than one period to a GIF or a JPEG picture.

If the links are broken you will have to rebuild and/or restore every link in your web site!

If you follow these steps your web site's URL will be the:

http://www.viscom.ohiou.edu/yournamenospaces/home.html

If you have a web site that will not sound logical using your own name you can select another naming configuration, BUT you must get an okay from Larry or Bill before proceding with the building of your web site.
