Meeting 10

Tables Revisited

More information about the tables exercise. It appears that it can't be done in PageMill with reasonable effort. The newspaper recreation exercise from Meeting 9 is cancelled. Another exercise will be given -- it will have a simpler table requirement.

Larry Nighswander performed this exercise in a program called GoLive CyberStudio. Larry's example page can be viewed at http://www.viscom.ohiou.edu/anews/untitled.html.

The GoLive program can position elements on the page using a grid and tables better than PageMill, but it creates rather large files due to complex tables. CNET has a review on the web and it can be viewed at http://www.cnet.com/Content/Builder/Authoring/Wysiwyg/ss03.html.

I tried to create the newspaper page in Microsoft FrontPage and had the same difficulty with tables as I had in PageMill 2 or in PageMill 3 beta.

However, Adobe Pagemaker 6.5 has an HTML export function that I tested with this assignment. It performed a credible job, although results were not perfect. The Pagemaker-exported HTML page can be viewed at https://www.afterness.com//webdesign/newspaper_schneider/pagemaker_newspage.html

This Pagemaker-created page was opened and tuned up a bit in Microsoft FrontPage 98 to tweak the type of the bottom teaser heads. This page can be viewed at https://www.afterness.com//webdesign/newspaper_schneider/pagemakerfrontpage.htm

Be careful of your type size when designing a page in Pagemaker for publication to the web. A web designer taking advantage of Pagemaker's HTML export function should design a page with type that can be seen on screen as it is desired in the final HTML file. If the usual print size of 11 or 12 point body type is used in the document, it will be enlarged upon export to HTML and will not properly fit the table cells. Odd gaps and spacing will occur within the table.

New Table Assignment

Begin this exercise by creating a new folder in the Webstar folder called yourname_herbs in to which to place everything. Don't forget to copy all needed GIF files to you ZIP drive's Webstar folder before you begin to link away. Open the file calledEWHerbs.html in the PageMill Tutorial Files folder in the Design Lab and finish the page with a table showing the herbs and information about them. Link this file to the EWHome.html file found on the Design Lab server and create a link back to the herbs page using the Plants section of EWHome.html. A printed example herbs page was shown in class, however a  104k GIF is available for viewing here: https://www.afterness.com//webdesign/images/bills_herbs_page.gif
