TEST GIVEN TODAY!
Turning Graphics into Links
Various ways exist to link a graphic to another web page. Make sure that you are in editing mode.
1) Position on screen the two pages you wish to link together and drag the little page icon from the upper left of the page you want to link onto the graphic.
2) Click on the graphic and type the name of the file you wish to link in the "Link To:" space at the bottom of the editing window.
3) Drag the page icon from the finder into the "Link To:" space at the bottom of the page.
If you wish to remove a link from a graphic, click the graphic and delete the text in the "Link To:" space at the bottom of the editing page, and press return.
These were demonstrated in class using the gif files found in the Image Map Exercise folder.
Image Maps
To create an Image Map, double click the graphic. A thick line should appear around the graphic and there should be some image map creation tools that appear on the right side of the toolbar.
Choose the rectangle to draw rectangular hot spots, the circle for round hot spots, and the polygon to create freeform shapes.
Link to another page by one of the three methods listed above for linking an entire graphic.
TIP: Do not use an excess of points to create a freeform shape -- each point is listed by x,y coordinates and too many points will slow down loading of the web page.
Mailto Function
To create an email link, type the phrase "mailto:" in the Link To space at the bottom of the page followed immediately by the email address of the person to whom it goes. Use no spaces.
When a viewer clicks on a mailto link, the viewer can send email to the person whose email address was entered.
Placing Adobe Acrobat Files
In order to place Acrobat (PDF) files, the Acrobat Reader 3.0 plug-in must be placed into PageMill's Plug-ins/Browser Plug-ins folder.
Place a copy of the Acrobat file in the same folder as the page you are designing.
Drag the Acrobat file from a finder window to the edit-mode PageMill page. Acrobat launches and a thumbnail appears displaying the first page of the Acrobat document.
To link the thumbnail to the actual Acrobat file, click on the thumbnail and choose the object properties tab in the Inspector palette. In the Name field, type HREF. In the Value field, type the file name of the PDF file.
Test it out in a Navigator window.
