Review Herbs Image Link Exercise
These were placed on the VisCom server under a folder called "class". For example, if your project folder was called "dpang_herbs" and the start page was named "ewhome.html", then the URL of the start page would be http://www.viscom.ohiou.edu/class/dpang_herbs/ewhome.html
There were some broken links and some naming convention problems on this exercise. Remember to reserve the suffix HTML for web page files only - don't name a folder with this extension or any extension for that matter. While it worked here, it could cause broken links on a different server. Do not put a period in a folder name either.
Creating Acrobat PDF Files
Creating Acrobat files is as easy as printing from an application. It saves all formatting intact as it was designed. The US Government uses Acrobat to deliver forms to individuals and businesses. For example, IRS tax forms can be found at http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/forms_pubs/index.html. Copyright application forms and instructions can be found at http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/forms.html.
Forms and CGI scripts
CGI scripts run on the server to add functionality to web pages, to connect them to databases, and to enable forms processing. A collection of free-ware CGI scripts is found at http://www.extropia.com
In class exercise: create a page in Quark and print it to the Acrobat printer driver, creating a PDF file. Place this file on a web page and link it to the PDF. Test in Netscape and show Bill.
Final Project description due soon: Please think about what personal project you wish to undertake for the final web design assignment that will be due on the day of the final exam. Submit a written statement by next week describing the project.
